As an instructor, I build my classes to focus on long-term learning rather than assessment and memorization. Instead of quizzes and tests, I want my students to focus on writing assignments of various sizes that help them create stronger and more confident papers at the end of my classes and in the future. My goals for student learning push students to think beyond their previous knowledge, demonstrate the diversity of history and its sources, and emphasize the role of writing in our present and future careers. By focusing on interactive tasks, both in and out of class, I include different options and medias to appeal to a variety of students. I aim to develop an inclusive, interactive learning environment throughout a semester that prioritizes introducing students to the dynamic history of the Middle East and improve essential skills necessary to thrive in universities and later careers. I believe it is important to remember that students arrive to my courses with different expectations and levels of proficiency in the materials and tools used. My goals hope to create a classroom in which all can benefit and learn from one another productively.
