EGMT 1530: How do we report war?
By examining the events of the Iraq War, we will explore how journalism and American perceptions of the Middle East changed as a result. Through an exploration of embedded journalism, the rise of local reporting, and blogs, we will consider how assumed differences developed and were perpetuated, leading to misunderstandings of an entire region. As we consider this historical context, we will discuss how social and temporal boundaries maintain distances between cultures, communities, and individuals across the world. Course Objectives: Understand how reporting influences our cultural biases and perspectives Consider how the dynamics of power shape how a subject is reported Explore the framing of local and global media structures Recognize the legacy of the Iraq War on the history of journalism and America’s perceptions of different cultures in the Middle East and around the world.
