EGMT 1520: Trust in science and distrust of scientists

In this course we will be introduced to the conflict behind “trust the science” – that our deductions of empirical truth change depending on the knowledge of that scientific moment. We will practice framing questions and classifying knowledge while engaging with past and present examples scientific inquiry. This course clarifies the scientific process by identifying the scientist as a rule breaker and rule enforcer, discussing the damage dealt by false scientific understanding, and come to terms with the reason for modern skepticism of scientific guidelines. We will engage with researchers to understand the ideals and realities of how researchers search for empirical truth. Once we have experience in the difficulty of uncovering true empirical truth, we will discuss how this tattered history has led to modern difficulty with scientific acceptance. Through structured discussions and in-class assignments, our class will cover roots of scientific skepticism.
