Shu-Chen Chen
Associate Professor of Chinese
My academic background includes historical linguistics (MA), Buddhist studies (PhD), language pedagogy (teaching Mandarin at UVA since 2005), and Chinese calligraphy (practiced as a teen in Taiwan). These fields connect with calligraphy, which remains prominent throughout Chinese-speaking regions globally. You'll notice calligraphic styles on storefront signs across China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Chinatowns in cities like San Francisco and Vancouver—adding cultural richness to travel experiences. This aesthetics focused engagement class helps students appreciate various calligraphy styles in Chinese history and culture, regardless of Chinese language knowledge. Master Ji-fang Wu from Taiwan will join via Zoom, providing authentic insights into East Asian calligraphy. Students can learn stroke methods of Wang Xizhi (303-361 CE) and develop their own style using brush and ink. Calligraphy practice offers a meditative experience—I've noticed students often linger after class, enjoying this contemplative state. The course provides a relaxed environment for learning about Chinese history, culture, and calligraphic arts.
