As a Classicist specializing in Environmental Humanities, I study Greek and Latin texts in order to understand how ancient people thought about and interacted with their surroundings. I believe that we can learn about ourselves and our future by studying the distant past. How does the world around you affect your behavior, and vice versa? How does your thinking about the environment affect your actions? What does it mean to be human, and what does it mean to not be human? We have been, and will be, trying to answer these questions for millennia. In the classroom, I use ancient Mediterranean languages and literature to help students feel less alone and more connected. Anything that you worry about today was worried about in some form thousands of years ago.
