Eli Carter
I’m originally from California, and I’ve spent much of the last twenty-five years immersed in Brazilian culture through research, teaching, and lived experience. I earned my PhD from UCLA and have taught at UVA for the past twelve years. My research and teaching focus on Brazil and the broader Lusophone world, particularly film and television, as well as on questions of culture, politics, and representation. I am also interested in aesthetics and in how form and style shape meaning in the world. What excites me about the Engagements program is the opportunity to help students see how close attention to art and media can open onto deeper questions about society, ethics, and everyday life. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing soccer, and spending time with my family.
