Engagement with a cultural artifact—whether a book, a film, photograph, performance, work of art or an item accessed through social media—reflects the manner in which we connect our private lives with the public sphere. In other words, how we read or encounter a text or cultural phenomenon is inextricably tied to how we negotiate and engage our social worlds. Focusing on Latiné literature and culture, my teaching is student-centered with an emphasis on students’ self-expression and intellectual development. I see myself as a facilitator in helping every student understand that they are agents for change in their own lives, in that of their families and friends, and in their future professions and communities.
