Caleb Hendrickson

Advising Fellow

I’m a scholar of religion with interests in art, experience, and theories of culture. I work mainly with sources in western religious thought and philosophy.

I teach Engagements classes on the topics of awe, play, and images. These topics lead to reflection on some basic facets of what it means to be human: consciousness, humility, freedom, and transcendence become areas for exploration. A liberal arts education is a process of discovery. My hope is that these classes create opportunities for students to uncover something new about themselves and the world around them.

I am originally from Minnesota, where I attended St. Olaf College and learned how to outlast long winters by reading long books. I completed a PhD in Religious Studies at UVA and taught at Carleton College in Minnesota before returning to Charlottesville to teach in the Engagements and advise pre-major students.
