EGMT 1530: Who is an immigrant?
This Engaging Difference course explores the concept of immigration. Who is considered an immigrant? What does it mean to be an immigrant? And, how do we “other” immigrants? This class delves into the varied experiences of immigrants in the United States over the past one hundred years. We will discuss the social, cultural, political, environmental, and economic factors that shape immigration, and the impact of immigration on individuals and societies. The course also examines different understandings of the immigrant experience and the complexities of identity formation in the context of immigration. To that end, we will engage with literary and cultural texts, documents from economics and social sciences, documentaries and podcasts. We will explore what bicultural, multicultural, and transborder identities represent and how new generations of young people grapple with their complex identities, lives, and futures.
