EGMT 1520: The Happiness Experiment
Although philosophers and religious thinkers have proposed various views on happiness throughout history, it is only in recent decades that scientists have begun searching for a “happiness formula.” In this course, we will explore empirical research in psychology that sheds light on the components of well-being and examine how it confirms or challenges ancient philosophical and spiritual perspectives on the good life. We will learn how psychologists gather and interpret data to construct their theories of happiness and how those methodologies differ from philosophical and religious modes of thinking. Additionally, we will engage directly with the science of happiness by testing its key findings in our daily lives, comparing them with our pre-existing beliefs and practices, and discussing whether the proposed happiness formula is adequate.
