Mathematics is often portrayed as being objectively true, but there are many ways of knowing and doing mathematics. For example, in a base four system, 2+2 is 10! In this course we will explore multiple ways of knowing in mathematics, such as the Babylonian system and numbers in different bases. To further understand subjectivity in mathematics, we will interrogate mathematical claims made in the real world. For example, we will consider how different media outlets might use mathematics to present contrasting versions of the truth. We will critique both methods of collecting data as well as presenting data, and we will become critical of mathematical claims which can be misguided or, sometimes, intentionally deceitful. Finally, we will conduct our own empirical studies to apply what we’ve learned about mathematics as a way of knowing.
